At Radio Taxis Southampton, we are incredibly grateful for your continued loyalty and trust. For over 50 years, we have been proud to serve as Southampton’s driving force, committed to providing you with reliable, exceptional taxi and private hire services.
We are writing to let you know about an upcoming update to our fare structure, which will take effect on Monday, 6th July 2026. We understand that price adjustments raise questions, and we want to be completely transparent about why this change is necessary.
Why are our fares changing? For more than half a century, our core principle has been to protect our customers by keeping our prices standard, fair, and affordable. Unlike other platforms, we have always resisted “surge pricing” during high-demand events.
However, this commitment has created a significant challenge. Because competitor apps use hyper-inflated surge pricing, a massive earnings gap has opened up for drivers. For example, while a standard Radio Taxis fare for a local journey might be £8, competitor apps often offer drivers upwards of £25 for the exact same distance.
Supporting our drivers and securing your ride As independent contractors, our drivers choose when and where they work. The financial temptation of surge pricing from other operators has naturally pulled drivers away from our network, resulting in a driver shortage that impacts our ability to fulfil your pre-booked journeys.
To combat this, we are adjusting our fare structure to ensure we offer upfront, transparent, fixed pricing that fairly incentivises our driver partners to stay with us. This change is vital to maintaining the high standard of safety and reliability you expect from us, while ensuring we continue to offer some of the lowest driver commission rates in the country.

Day Rate: (6am to 10pm)
1st mile £6.00
1.1 miles – 5 miles will be charged at £2.40 a mile.
5.1 miles – 10 miles will be charged at £2.20 a mile
10+ Miles will be charged at £2.00 Per Mile.
Minimum Fare: £6.00
MPV’s Vehicles:
1st mile £12.00
1.1 miles – 5 miles will be charged at £4.80 a mile.
5.1 miles – 10 miles will be charged at £4.40 a mile
10+ Miles will be charged at £4.00 Per Mile.
Minimum Fare: £20.00
Night Rate: (10pm to 6am)
1st mile £8.00
1.1 miles – 5 miles will be charged at £3.00 a mile.
5.1 miles – 10 miles will be charged at £2.80 a mile
10+ Miles will be charged at £2.50 Per Mile.
Minimum Fare: £8.00
MPV’s Vehicles:
1st mile £12.00
1.1 miles – 5 miles will be charged at £4.80 a mile.

Christmas & New Year rates remain 50% extra of the Day rate.

Waiting time of more than 10 minutes are chargeable at £0.40 per minute
Cancelled on Arrival – £6.00 – Driver must wait a minimum of 10 Minutes.
